Each year a group of young, modern artists is nominated for this prestigious prize and their work is displayed at Tate Britain throughout October. The winner is announced in December. Visit the exhibition and try and pick the winner before the judges’ decision is in.
The Turner Prize celebrates modern art and artists and always creates fierce debate about who should win, the state of art in Britain and even about the value of modern art itself. Past winners include Gilbert and George, Damien Hirst, Simon Starling, Anthony Gormley and Chris Ofili.
This year the shortlisted artists are Enrico David, Roger Hiorns, Lucy Skaer and Richard Wright. One of these artists will win the £40,000 prize money and widespread publicity. The aim is to celebrate younger talent and to focus attention on new developments in the visual arts and can include work in various media including photography, video, sculpture, painting and more.
As well as seeing the Turner Prize Exhibition you can also discover Tate Britain’s unmatched permanent collection that includes work by JMW Turner who gives his name to the prize. Other highlights include pieces by William Blake, Francis Bacon, John Constable, Barbara Hepworth, David Hockney and many others.
